Compaq cdrom not recognized

Postby vtharris » Sun Feb 08, 2004 7:01 pm

I hope somebody out there can help me. I've searched everywhere for an answer, but can't find one. My problem is this: I have a Compaq 5724 running Windows98. Whenever I try to play a game, such as CivIII, I get the message to insert the disk, press ok, and try again. When I go into MyComputer, the F: Drive is listed, but if I try to open it, it says the drive is not accessible, that the F: drive is not ready. I tried the Scanreg option at the Mddos prompt, but the system restore operation failed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I take it you do have a CD in the drive?
Could be the lens needs to be cleaned with a CD cleaner.
If you go to "Device Manager" is there a or a beside your CD Drive?

Yes, I do have a CivIII cd in the drive. And no, there isn't a ! or ? next to it in device manager. I'll try the lens cleaner, then get back. Thanks.
