Compaq Presario 7474

Postby teammpp » Tue Jan 27, 2004 12:16 am

Hi everyone. I am a newbie to computers but I am really stumped on this one. I had picked up a virus while using McAfee anti-virus (worst software ever) and lately I installed AVG Anti-virus which found Win32/Parite.B had attacked all the exe files. Anyway it deleted them and I lost access to everything on the PC except for the back up Win98se in the OPTIONS/CABS folder. I reinstalled Windows but for some reason it didnt install the Compaq Support Files. I am having problems with the PC still not being able ot use certain software and to access the internet I am having to use Opera (IE wont run or reinstall).
I have tried a full restore but due to the missing files it wont let me. Has anyone got this same model who could send me a set of the Compaq Support Files so I can get the Full Restore accomplished.

Thanks

Here's all the Compaq Drivers: .
You might also want to make sure the virus is really gone: .

Sorry but that link didnt help. Been there a couple of times. I am looking for the Compaq Support functions that allow me to access the quickrestore area. When I go into the quickrestore program it keeps saying the .exe is missing. When I click on start menu and select Compaq Support it says:

The drive or network connection that the shortcut 'Compaq Support.Ink' refers to is unavailable.

I cant restore my PC without this section and I cant install it from the quickrestore CD's until I have it. I am hoping somone using this same PC can email me the required files.

Thanks

Ok.. But what I gave you first is what you're needing.
From the HP/Compaq Website: "What is Compaq support software?

Support software is the collection of device drivers, configuration programs, flashable ROM images, utilities, agents, and more that is available to keep your computer performing at its best. Most support software from Compaq is packaged in a bundle called a "SoftPaq". For example, there is probably a SoftPaq containing the latest video driver for your computer. As new versions of software are released, you can come to these web pages to obtain the SoftPaqs to update your computer.

The networking connection you refered to is HP's way of "phoning home" to get what you need. You simply need to install the software/drivers for all the hardware on the computer. 90% of it is at that link. Then setup your Internet Connection and go th the Windows Update and update the Window's family.

I finally got it all figured out. Those drivers werent what i was looking for. They helped with other parts of the system but what I really need is the PowerQuest EasyRestore EXE files for this PC system.

I looked and noticed that Symantec now own them and they are looking around $300 to purchase the software which I believe should be free since it comes with the computer in the first place.

I am really on a catch 22. The files I need are on the Quick Restore CD's but I cant run the Quick Restore files without having the files on my system. I tried deleting the partition in the drives with FDisk and then running QuickRestore with a bootdisk but that didnt work either.

By the way. I know I said in my first post that I was a newbie to computers but that was a misprint. It should have read I am not a newbie. I have been working with computers since right back on the old Oracle and Spectrums. Been programming for as long as I can remember (started with basic on the Spectrum 48K) and have a few computer qualifications while actually teaching the tutor that was taking our class

If you already deleted the partition you will HAVE to do a clean install.$300 for the software you need?....get xp pro...its cheaper and better.HP support, which is the link brad gave you,has all the compaq files you need.Really all you need is drivers....nothing else. There machines run alot smoother without all the compaq diagnostic and other crap software they offer.

Hey Liljim,

I thought it was just drivers too. But I reinstalled Windows with no luck. It just installed the windows and gave me basic drivers (sound, connection, modem etc). But it didnt cure my other problems. As for clean install. Thats what I'm trying to do but it wont let me. The only way I can do it is to reinstall PowerQuest Easyrestore so the Restore Disks will function.

Sounds strange I know but thats what happens when you have McAfee on your computer. They have the worst anti-virus software available. I only discovered the virus cause a friend said to get rid of McAfee and use AVG.

It found the Win32/Parite.B and deleted over 6000 files

when you say its not letting you perform a clean install, what is it telling you, what error are you getting and also what disk are you using to perform the instalation?Mcafee shouldnt be causing any errors now,if im understanding you correctly, considering you formatted the drive.Personally i would find the diagnostic software for your hard drive, write zero's to it and start from scratch. Then install windows using a full windows cd,not a restore or upgrade disk, then install drivers.
