what happens if you open windows media player?

I think that if I were you, the next thing I would do is go to the window update (usually found at the top of the start meny,) and see if there are any updates that you may need for Media Player.

I've never found that using Add New Hardware to be that helpful when dealing with software issues... But I'm not a PC God like some of the others on this site....

It's not much, but it's the best I can do for ya

If you have the driver disk for your sound card, you should try reinstalling them.

I noticed that last month when I updated my Realtek AC'97 sound drivers, that my sound stopped working--this was a Microsoft update.

I didn't notice that my sound was gone when I first did the update, I later got the sound working by reinstalling the drivers--Then I noticed that MS had an audio update, I downloaded it and ran it--and my sound didn't work  . Nailed twice by the same update! With XP I rolled back the driver and it works.

Don't download drivers from Microsoft especially the video--go the manufacturer's web site and get them.
