I don't know what package you bought with Norton, but remove Norton Utilities. Not Norton Antivirus. If you want to run Norton utlities do it from the cd

Norton System Utilities is a resource hog, don't leave it on your system.

I don't have the Norton disc. A friend downloaded it onto my system, when he gave it a workover, last year. Not to mention, I use the Utilities every week, to Optimize, Defrag (because it is much faster than Windows Defrag), etc.
When I am online, and surfing, etc, like now, my System Resources are at 65% free. So, it may use up a bit of memory, but I really don't think it could be using enough to cause my problem...could it ? I have 256 MB, 56K modem with Win98SE / IE6 on my AMD Duron Processor (656 MHz) system.
There has to be something causing this problem, but what ?
I have known known viruses, after checking on more than a half dozen virus scans. I have ran many spyware/adware scans, and checked through my HijackThis, and everything is good. I even went into SYSEDIT, and maximized my memory use through Vcache..........nothing is working for me.
It's not a major problem (YET), but these kinda things usually end up that way, if ignored.
One site pretty much gave up, and told me to dump my system, and reinstall.....that to me is just a cop out way of not dealing with it. I CANNOT dump my system ! It is far too much work, and utterly a pain, because I'll have to save everything, and something always gets lost in the shuffle.
Any other suggestions.........Please ??

With Windows 98 , reformating the drive and reinstalling the O/S is not a cop out. There is a reason your system is slow, nothing is ever removed from the registry, it gets added to all of the time.

I still stand by my recomendation of removing Norton Utilities. Its a resource hog that Windows 98 can't afford.

Remove it and your speed will pick up. You might thing that its doing a bunch of terrific stuff, but its really all bells and whistles. Don't remove Norton Anti Virus!

A lot of the advise we give here, will solve your problem. And as you pointed out, the last place was't able to solve it your way.

Hope this helps

Sounds like I'm getting a little attitude here...?
Believe me, I'm not here to try to get people riled up. I am here because I have a pc situation that needs some attention, and I think I know best of all what is best for MY situation. I completely Appreciate everyone, and anyones help in this matter, and in this process have learned alot of things.....none have helped my particular situation, but I have to say taught me a lot for future reference. Its been a LONG week of trying to get this resolved, and ignoring other things needed to be done.
Are we ok ?
Ok.....Just recently I ran an IE repair, Registry repair, Defraged, Registry cleaned, and ran SFC (found only one fix on that)...Nothing has Still changed.
I'm thinking reinstalling Windows on top of itself, so I can save dumping everything, BUT...Is that safe ? I don't want that in itself to cause me Major Problems !
Could you give me details of HOW to do that, and info on if that is the SAFE thing to do ? Or....Is there a way I can try to repair Windows ?
Thanks.............Snake420.

It sounds to me like something is eating up your system resources.
Please post your HijackThis log so we can get a better idea of what is running.

Just to let you know...I've done the Hijack posting many times now, and got no result really, beyond it was fine. I did disable SDIEINT.DLL to do with Stardownloader, to no help to my problem, through one forum. Maybe you can see something someone else may be missing though. I can hope.
