When I start up my computer, I get the following errors:
'Missing or corrupt file; "C:\Windows\himem.sys"'
'Missing or corrupt file; "C:\Windows\dblbuff.sys"'
'Missing or corrupt file; "C:\Windows\IFSHLP.sys"'
'Please type in the location for the Windows Expodential (i think that's what it said) eg;
'c:\Windows\Command.com'
This happened after my computer shut down. I'm guessing it was a virus. I have a Windows XP CD but it says the file 'tff____' something or other is corrupted, so I don't know what to do. Any solutions?

Turn the computer off, unplug it and wait 30 seconds before turning it back on.
While it is off, unplug the keyboard and plug it back in.
Can you start it in safe mode?
(As the computer restarts, press and hold down the Ctrl key until the Windows 98 Startup Menu appears select safe mode)

It did nothing. Same result as before. I checked the windows directory from the Commad Prompt and those files aren't in the Windows directory, like they should be. They're actually gone. I don't know what to do now. I need that computer running.

If I am not mistaken, those files you are refering to are for Windows 3.1
Boot into safe mode and do a roll back to a day that it worked aok.
Sounds like you tried to install a very old kiddie game
go to start --> programs-->accesories-->system tools--->restore
This is an edit, I messed up, 98 doesn't have a system restore
I got mixed up here. See below for solution

Did you look in C:\Windows\Options\Cabs?
You could also try C:\Cabs, C:\options
You never know the might be there
You could also try getting a copy for someone else who is running win98.

Gecko could be right, I saw the file IFSHLP.sys and said this is windows 3.1.
You still have a shot at restoring the system.
boot into a dos prompt---tap the f8 key on boot and select dos mode.
type Scanreg /restore there is a space between the g and the /. You will be given 4 previous installs to select from to restore to---there is a 5th if you scroll down.
I pick the fifth one most of the time, only because #5 gets toasted on the reboot no matter whic one you select.
