Shutdown and scandisk errors

Postby petalyn47 » Sun May 09, 2004 7:37 am

Please help if possible!

My system is a CompaqPresario 100P running Win98(with updates).

1) Error on shutdown-cpqdfwag caused an invalid page fault in module unknown at 0000:10001c6b. I click Start/Shutdown and the screen blanks then reappears. I then do the start/shutdown thing again and the message comes up- click ok and the computer shuts down.

2) The computer will not start in safe mode

3) Last night during normal scheduled maintanance scandiskstuck at 33% and this message came up `Scandisk detected an invalid long filename entry on this drive but was unable to fix it. To fix this problem, run scandisk for windows'. A+C+D caused scandisk to restart, and run to the end with no further problems.

I have AdAware, ZoneAlarm and Vet Antivirus, all up to date with no recent alarms- I have also run PCDoctor on Call with no success. Running Dr Watson also shows no problems..............

Thanks in advance :P

Go to Start>Run and type msconfig>click OK, then go to the startup tab.In here you need to uncheck cpqdfwag which may also be listed as Compaq Diagnostics.Let us know if that helps.

*Here's a link to some very good information on Compaq

Also, while you're in MSCONFIG, on the General Tab / Advanced Button / Make sure there's a check in "Disable Fast Shutdown".

shutdown errors

Postby petalyn47 » Sun May 16, 2004 5:36 am

Thanks for your help, people. The unchecking of cpqdfwag in msconfig has removed this problem, and I have confirmed that `disable fast shutdown' is checked.

I have had a further episode of scandisk starting for no obvious reason, and sticking at 34% with the invalid long filename message. Is this caused by a software problem, hardware or some gremlin that has got past all my protection??

Do you mean SCAN DISK started when you booted your PC?
Or it just started after PC was up and running for awhile?

If it's at Boot-up,you can read this:

Hi Thanks for your reply- I should have said, Scandisk just started when I wasn't around, while the computer was running- this is the second time this has happened, and when I try to click OK, it is frozen. I have to turn off and reboot- which runs Scandisk again. If I then click OK when the message appears, it starts fo scan from 34% and completes with no further messages, and windows starts.

Weird.....

Do you have SCAN DISK set to run at Start-up?

Scandisk errors

No- it runs only for scheduled maintenence, or when the computer is turned off without shutting down properly (ie. if it freezes, and will not unfreeze)- but this has been happening when the computer is idle, with no obvious issues at the time.......

Almost sounds like the W32/Ganda.A worm....

The worm copies itself as SCANDISK.EXE into Windows directory and also it copies itself there with a randomly-generated name (for example AYDJSSKJ.EXE). Then the worm creates a startup key for the SCANDISK.EXE file:
[HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"ScanDisk" = "%WinDir%\SCANDISK.EXE"

You can read here for more info to see if it applies to your pc...

Scandisk error

Postby petalyn47 » Wed May 19, 2004 4:05 am

Hi Cactus-I have checked Scandisk.exe files and found 2, both 141 kb, installed the same date- \options\cabs and \command.

I assume this means that I do not have the worm, although having looked at all .exe files on my computer there some I am unfamiliar with, but which are probably harmless.

For example: oisetup.exe- 57.2kb, pnpwtape.exe (seagate software) device property pages? 14.9kb, orlando.exe (screen saver) 1778kb.

One I am concerned about is Itdskelu.exe, internal name KNPSAW.BIN
This is 72kb, from Klik&Play Software Stand Alone Games- is this a web game-maybe downloaded by my kids.........or?

I have had various .dll error messages over a couple of months, mostly in connection with QuickBooks. This seems to have resolved for the moment, since I have unchecked cpqdfwag.

Thanks for your interest

Why not update your AV and do a Complete/Thorough scan?
Quickbooks is nortorious for "not playing well" with other running apps. and Firewalls.

Hi Brad and Cactus- I'm back re this problem, having done the AV check etc. I had abandoned trying to fix it, due to work committments, but today have run Checkdisk, Scandisk and Defrag in safe mode.....or tried to!

Scandisk advised of 30 errors, with the message `cannot be opened in MS-Dos mode because its MS-Dos name including the names of any folders it is in is longer than 66 characters.' Ignore/Repair by moving folder/Delete the affected folder.

I have continued, after checking Ignore. Then it tells me that SDisk has started 10 times because windows or another program has been writing to this drive etc.......? in Safe?

I have read the post re unplugging the phone connection (I have an ISDN connection), and will do this, but before I go through it all again, is it safe to check the automatically fix errors in Scandisk+safe mode? The various files and folders relate to Windows,
Quick Payroll and HP (I presume my PSC1350).

Also Defrag in safe mode restarted after completing 10%- which is better than before when it spent all night grinding away, and got nowhere at all........

Thanks in advance, and also for your earlier help..

Ok, and when your done,if your still having problems...
download Hijackthis ---Important---Create a permanent folder
EG---- Open MyDocuments----Right click an empty spot and select NEW---Folder----Name the new folder HJT ---this is where you will want to save Hijackthis too, also, backups will be stored there.

Download from here
http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe

Do a SCAN----Scan will change to SAVE LOG----copy and paste the WHOLE contents of the log
here... Don't try and fix anything yet----most entries are harmless and needed.
