Sound card uninstalled?

What do you mean by Custom?
Do you mean on-board or is it a pci card?
Right-click MyComputer and click Properties.
Click Device Manager...scroll down until you find the sound card,it should say what it is here.
Are there any Yellow !!Exclamation marks in the Device Manager?

What are your System Specs?
What is your Operating System?

Ok, there are yellow "!!" signs next to the PCI input controller and PCI multimedia audio device. I have tried to get the pc to look for drivers [turns up 2, one which I downloaded today] and have tried both, but when I tried to install either, it comes up with a sign saying that microsoft has not verified that they work with ME, and therefore, won't be installed :/

These are the newest NVidia drivers....try these!
http://www.nvidia.com/object/win9x_56.64
Download the drivers to a temp folder and then run the istallation.
Make sure you remove the OLD drivers first!
Try that.

Ok, installed the new drivers. Although I don't think it's my video card, whenever I press my mute button or try to work the volume controls, I get "Your computer may not have a soundcard or it may not be installed properly". I opened up the pc yesterday, checked if the connections were intact, took it out, gave it a clean, put it back in, taking note of the model and serial no. I have downloaded the latest driver for my sound card and installed it, but it won't accept it as it "hasn't been verified for use on windows ME by microsoft"..

How can I actually reinstall the soundcard if I only got it pre-installed on my IBM? It's an OEM soundcard, SB Live! Value.

Already done that, removed my old drivers, installed the new. Got the sound and video back, but sound is back to its usual, cracky sound. I doubt it's the speakers, there anything else it could be? Even when I'm not playing music you can hear a 'cracking' noise, or even something like a sparkler.
