IPHLPAPI.DLL and "Main.idx" errors -AOL restarts a

I'm getting the above message and AOL tech support is useless but I'm not sure if this is causing mt problem which started 5 days ago (I've been using AOL 9.0 since Jan with no problem). Here's my situation.

AOL 9.0 and 8.0 will load correctly once. Then when I shut down it automating starts to load - even if I click cancel - and then freezes. My close program window shows waol. Ever few times I get message "Main.idx file is damaged". I've uninstalled AOL completely and removed Main.idx files. Then when I reinstall AOL 8.0 or 9.0 it creates them and then I can sign on once before this automatic restart (and freeze) happends. After 24 hours (really!) on phone with 35 (really) different AOL tech folk, I was told to reinstall windows. This means backing up 4 years of files! I see others have had AOL IPHLPAPA.DLL errors and Main.idx messages but not necessarily on same computer. And no one has mentioned this automatic restart and freeze. Before I uninstall Windows 98SE, do any of you techies have a solution?

As far as I can tell there is no IPHLPAPA.DLL

Probably a typo...

For your Main.idx problem:

In AOL 9.0, right click the AOL icon in the taskbar at the right hand corner of near the clock, then click on System Information. When it opens...it takes a few seconds...click on the Utilities tab at the top of the page. Click on the Quick Restore button at the bottom of the page. Click on Procedd, then follow any on-screen instructions after that.

If you donot have the AOL tray icon, click on Start, Programs and look for America Online (no version number next to it). Click on AOL System Information in the sub-menu.

In versions of AOL before 9.0:
Go to My Computer
Double-click the C: drive
Double-click on Program Files
Double-click on America Online X.0

((Note): If you have several installations of AOL, open the latest installation file, i.e., 8.0, 8.0a, etc. 8.0a if the latest installation.)

Doulbe-click on the Backup folder
Right-click on main (or main.idx)
Left-click on COPY
Click the BACK arrow in the upper left hand corner of the window
Right-click on the IDB folder
Left-click on PASTE
Answer YES to the question.
After that is done,
scroll down on the page and fine the COMPVER file.
Right-click on it, then left-click on DELETE.
Answer YES to send it to the Recycle Bin.
Restart AOL

If the above two procedures do not work, uninstall all AOL from the computer, then reinstall it.

Your biggest problem is AOL---I'm really not sure that AOL 9 is good for Win 98--I'd go back to 8, or 7.

Remove them all then go to run type in msinfo32 ----->go to tools and select System File Checker. click on settings and put a check in box for Check for deleted items. click ok then start. Make sure you know where the root directory for your cab files (win98) on the cd and point to it when it finds a missing file. If it finds missing files that start with hp, disreagard them, they're refering to hewlet packard printer drivers.

finish and reboot and go for a reinstall of AOL 7--forget their tech support, they can ruin and os. I haven't tried this newsgroup in 10 years, but there was one called aolsucks that covered all the bugs in aol
