connecting windows 98 to windows xp

Start by running the Networking Wizard on the WinXp machine. You should find it in the Network Connections Folder. It will walk you through the whole process and set your WinXp as Host.

I need more info than that. I tried that and it didn't work. I know there is much more to it than that, could you give me a run through in what I need to do? or a link that will tell me step by step?

You don't say whether you want to share an Internet connectionor not. Are you using DSL or a Cable modem?
I'm also assuming that you have an Ethernet Card installed in each.
For starters:


For Networking without a Hub using a Cross-over cable:

Just plug the cable into the two computers. To set it up go to Control Panel / Network.

If there is and entry there for TCP/IP fine. If not you need to add it. Click Add the Protocal / Add. Select "Microsoft" and select TCP/IP and OK.

Once you have TCP/IP install highlight it and click properties. Click "Specifiy IP address" and insert 192.168.000.001. Enter sub net mask of 255.255.255.000.

You may get asked if you want to reboot at this stage. Decline as there is more to do.

Click File and Printer sharing and tick both boxes. Now you can re-boot.

Do the same on the other computer but this time enter an IP address if 192.168.000.002 with the same mask. Install file and printer sharing as well and reboot.

Once the computers have re-booted you need to set up sharing. Right click on any drive or folder in Windows Explorer and clcik Sharing. Click shared as: Either axcept the name offered or enter one of your own. In access type I would suggest "Full" if you are the only one to be using these computers, otherwise enter passwords if required.

Do this for every Drive or folder you want to be visible of the other computer. If you select a Drive of Folder, all sub folders are automatically visible.

You now have Peer to Peer communication.

I just did what you said to do and it didn't work. And I am on a 56k modem, both machines but I want the windows 98 machine to be the host because I want that left on all the time so it can download and play games and all that and I use the other one for other stuff but I turn it off. Also, when I go to network and select all the things I need and add ip address etc on the windows 98 machine, before it asks me to reboot it asks me to insert the windows 98 disc so it can copy files. So I do that but it doesnt work, it just sits there and keeps asking me saying it cant find file, so I just skip the files and eventually it lets me past. It is windows 98 second edition so it should be working. This is so fustrating. It should be just plug cable in, turn computer on and thats it. Not all this mumbo jumbo.

When it asks for the Windows disk, put it in and then navigate (Browse) to the Win98 folder. It should "see" the files it needs there.
I wish it was easier on you but we'll help you. If you'd use the Wizard on the WinXp machine, as suggested, it would help you create a disk to setup the Win98 machine but you would still need to extract some files.
Also, WinXp will need to be the Host with this type of setup. To get around that you need to get a Hub.

I did that with the windows 98 disc, it says it cannot find the files. It just sits there. I'm lost.
