Problems getting rid of Zestyfind spyware

Postby ec1127 » Thu Jun 10, 2004 7:53 pm

My computer began running really slow and messy a few weeks ago, so I started researching the problem. I have already downloaded spybot, and it does not correct the problem. Apparently ZestyFind is new and has just recently morphed, so random file names are being used, so spybot and adaware do not catch it. I have also been on Symantec's web-site, however, the file name infecting my computer is not msg117.dll. When I do a search to rename the file, no file is located. So I am unsure as to what steps to take now to rid my computer of this problem, however, it has to be done because it is causing my system to become unstable and freeze off an on throughout the day. It's highly annoying. Any help you can provide would be great! I also ran Hijack This...here's the log:

Press Ctrl/Alt/Del and "End Task" or "End Process" on each of the following: (They may or may not be there)

ALCHEM.exe

Close all other open Windows and have HiJackThis Fix:[/b]

Go to Control Panel / Add/Remove Programs and remove the following if they are there:

TOOLBAR or Huntbar

Now delete these Folders or Files that are Highlighted: (You may need enable "Show all Files" and disable "Hide System Files" in Windows Explorer / Tools / Folder Options / View Tab) (You may have to boot to "Safe Mode" in order to delete some Files/Folders)

C:\PROGRAM FILES\TOOLBAR
C:\WINDOWS\ALCHEM.exe

Now, empty your TEMP Folder / Temporary Internet Files Folder and then empty your "Recycle Bin" and reboot.

Still having Problems

Postby ec1127 » Fri Jun 11, 2004 4:56 pm

Alright guys, thanks for your help getting rid of Huntbar. As far as I know that's done...I followed all of your instructions Brad. However, I am still getting a pop-up screen that starts loading with the address 69.20.62.53 (that's the first part and all I can get, it flashes too quickly). Then the pop-up changes to whatever advertisement is running. When I rebooted after following your instructions, it brought up 8 different pop-up ads, all within a few seconds. Then SpyBot told me that it had detected a registry change. I denied the change. Also, when I run SpyBot, it finds two files every time I run the Search and Destroy:

Look2Me
DSO Exploit

Both of these files come up, I ask SpyBot to fix the problems, and each time SpyBot says it has fixed the problem but if I run a check again, they come up again. Any other ideas? Here's the Hijack This log again:

Here the instructions to remove these:

Look2Me = http://www.pchell.com/support/look2me.shtml

According to the below link this may only be a bug in SpyBot. Are you running SpyBot 1.3 with all patches.
