Web Developing Probably for Gecko

Hey Gecko I am going to take your advice and get something done with html before I get into php. Now my question about html is how do I get to have a forum on my website? I know that you can use phpBB but wouldn't I have to use all php? Also I have another question. Is there way to make people login with html?

I would really like to use php so I would not have to redo the site after I get a html up, but php from what I have looked at looks nearly impossible. Any suggestions on how I could get going on php? I am going to look through the tutorial you gave me. That is about the only thing I can think of and hope that it works.

Changing a site over from HTML to PHP is quite simple. Basically because most php pages are comprised of html. So I would suggest building the site in html and then down the line when you learn php add things. I am a php programmer and I can say that it can be complicated so make sure you pace yourself. I started out doing all HTML pages and gradually added php to them as I learned. You can actually make an complete html page and give it the php extension. So that once you learn php you wont have to worry about changing all your page links around.

But as I said I would get html down good before you attempt php. If you just jump straight into php you will be lost. If you have any questions feel free to ask. I will do my best to help out.

So I should make my html and get that down before I jump into the php. But my question is this, all I have to do is basically change the extension? Also, as I have stated in previous postings I want it to be a site that people have to login to as we do here. How do I do that with html? Thanks Kalypso

If you want it to be a login site only then you will either have to use phpnuke or learn php really fast . When I do logins I use php and mysql. I put all my users in the mysql database and then when someone tries to login I query the database to see if they are a member and if their password matches. You are not ready for this. Is the passwording necessary? Are you trying to keep non members out of the site or just the forums? You can make a site and then have a link to forums. If you use phpbb for forums you can set it up so that only registered members can view forums, but at your current state I can not think of a way to have a login page.

Do you host through a free company? Because if you have full access to the webhosting machine you might be able to password the web folder. If you do this it will make the person enter a username and pass to access the site. But this is only if you have the ability to password folders (most pay hosting sites allow this but not many free ones). Hope this is a little help to ya.

The passwording will be necessary becuase it will be a guild website. I do not want people from the other guilds getting into my stuff and wrecking/spying. If the login is the only thing I have to learn in php that would be great. But that is something that needs to be learnt. Also Gecko mentioned something about severside login where the people have to login into my server to see the site. How would I work that? Right now the site is on a freebie but upon its completion and the completion of my webserver it will be on my own domain. Thanks again kalypso

OK let’s get you started with a java script login
as I said not totally secure but it will keep most people out.
Go and fill in all the boxes then set up your users.
Click the update/show code button and then copy the script and put it into a new html page.
You will now have a login
