Do any of you have one. I plan on opening one when I retire in 4 years. I would like to get some inside tips if I could.

I don’t own a computer repair business,
but all my friends and their friends and my neighbors think I do.

My best advice is to do quality work at a fair price and
learn to have lots of patience when it comes to novice computer owners.

Ok

I guess just tell me how you started it. Start from square 1. What qualifications did you get (A+, Degrees) what kind of insurance did you get ect... I’m working on a business degree now. And I plan to get my A+ cert. Another question that I have is where do you get your parts? Do you just order them from sites or do you get them elsewhere?

And thanks to Geek Girl for signing my guestbook! The bunny's back!

I tried running my own computer business but it didn't work out. There are too many business in my area to compete with. I sent out hundreds of flyers and got 3 call backs. Make sure before you start you find out the percentage of computer businesses in your area per people with computers. I live in a live in a small city and there are over 50 computer repair shops. Not a good place to start.

I worked with Geeks Direct here in Idaho where I drove the Geek Mobile (Honda Element with Geek written all over it), to people homes and business. Most of the time I found I was hitting people away from the cities. There was a lot of driving. They were charging $50.00 an hour in which people didn't have a hard time paying especially here in Idaho. I really enjoyed purchasing hardware and software from Newegg. They always had thing to me within 2 days and options for quicker deliver. Shipping is almost always free. I hope this has given you some ideas. Not to sound like it isn't worth it. I plan on trying again starting my own computer business later once I pay some things off.

Make sure you get a business licence or there could be problems that may arise. A+ Cetification is a must if you want to get anywhere. It is good to get an inventory of hardware and software once you get into it more.

Thanks for the info! The town I'm moving to doesnt have any PC shops of any kind. People have to drive 30 miles to the nearest place. Best of all Im practically related to half the town due to my wife (her whole family lives there  ). Everytime we go there on vacation im working on thier computers the whole time. May as well get payed for it.

Sup Limp,
Funny you ask that about A+ cert. I should of taken the exam 2 years ago but I didnt. I purchased the new A+ Cert training guide because I was told they changed some things in the A+ exam. It is not an adaptive exam anymore and some of the MS-Dos was removed and Xp was added.
I do plan on taking the exam around Feb. Wish me luck
