I have contracted Alcra B and am desperate to remove it

Heya,

I ran Killbox in safe mode - it didn't appear to go anything, and I did not reboot.
I then ran MSNVirRem, it found the same two problems as I found in my previous post.
I rebooted and I had the same removal message, but this time I also had a message to say windows couldn't find that system32......... file either.
I ran MSNVirRem again and it said the system was clean.
I ran Hijackthis and it stayed open!
Also, I can now open the registry editor (although I forget what it was I was looking for in the first place) and fix my start page.

I can't help thinking that now that I'm connected to the net, the next time I reboot, it'll all turn to porridge again.

I've just run an adware check which picked up 32 problems - as it has done every day I've had this virus.

I've also just run spybot and it is still finding the same problems:
The Windows Microsoft Security Centre has been disabled - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\Currentcontrolset\Services..........and on and on.

There must be more I'm supposed to do.

YES we finally we got that bad guy!

Don't worry to much over the things found by Ad Aware and spybot they should be just leftovers from the infection.
I would have had you run at least one of them as a clean up process.

Now let's see if we can clean up the rest of it and get your firewall working again.

Run Hijackthis and put a check next to the below entry and then click the Fix Checked button:

Reset the Microsoft Security Centre:

Click Start > Control Panel Double-click the Security Center.
In the right pane, click Windows Firewall. The Windows Firewall appears.
Select On Click OK to close the Windows Firewall.
In the left pane of the Security Center, select Change the way Security Center alerts me.
Click Alert Settings. Select Alert Settings, Firewall, and Virus Protection.
Click OK
Click Automatic Updates Select Automatic Click OK.
Exit the Security Center.

At this point I suggest that you run a full system scan with Norton and AVG Anti spyware just to make sure we have gotten everything related to this infection.

Heya again,

I ran hijack this and the need2find bar is not showing, so I'm unable to remove it. It'll probably be back when I reboot. It's still sitting in my programmes list and I'm unable to remove it.

I turned on the firewall, but I am unable to select "change the way security centre alerts me" - it is gray rather than blue.

I'll reboot and see what I can do, but I imagine that every time I reboot, I gain everything I got rid of.

I really think we have gotten the infection cleaned, so you should not be reinfected with a reboot.
It's just a matter of clearing up the left overs

More than likely Norton is controlling the security center alerts and that is why it's grayed.


But let's make sure that all the registry changes were done by MsnVirRem.exe and see where the uninstaller is for need2find bar.

We will need to run the registry editor:
Click Start > Run now type:
regedit and press enter

Before you change anything please make a backup of the registry:
Make sure that My Computer is highlighted in the left pane
Now click File and select Export save the file to root like this (C:\bankup.reg)
Now navigate to the subkey:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Explorer\Advanced
In the right pane, the values should be:

"Hidden" = "2"
"SuperHidden" = "0"
"ShowSuperHidden" = "0"

If they are different please make them match the above.
Navigate to the subkeys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Policies\System
In the right pane, the values should be:

"NoAdminPage" = "1"

If it is different please make it match the above.

Navigate to the subkeys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

In the left pane scroll down to "need2find bar" and select it

In the right pane there will be an UninstallString entry, right click on it and select Modify.
Do Not change anything just copy the path in the text box and paste it to notepad and save it.
(I want you to post this path in your next reply)
(you could try going to this path and see if the uninstaller is actually there)

Exit the Registry Editor.

Click Start, click My computer and then right click on your C: drive and select "Properties"
Now click the "Disk cleanup" button, in the next window put a check next to Recycle Bin, Temporary Internet Files and Temporary Files click OK and then click yes in the popup window.

Next you need to clear your system restore points:

Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
On the System Restore tab, check Turn off System Restore or Turn off System Restore on all drives.
Click Apply when you see the confirmation message, click Yes.

Now turn system restore back on.

Please post a new HiJackThis log and the uninstallstring path from above when you reply.

It seems everything is back to normal. Things are still running slow, but I guess that's because of all the junk and extra bits and pieces I've installed.

The path for Need2Find was just to make sure there wasn't something hidden that could come back to haunt you.

If you want to remove the need2find bar from your add and removes programs list you will need to run the registry editor: (leaving it won't hurt anything)
Click Start > Run now type:
regedit and press enter

Navigate to the subkeys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
In the left pane scroll down to "need2find bar" and select it
In the right pane there will be an UninstallString entry, right click on it and select delete.
