Windows 7 freezing

My friend just bought a brand new alienware computer. She told me it freezes up on her all the time and she wants me to come over and look at it. I'm assuming that it's a hardware issue and she will have to send it back for a new one. I was just curious if there is any way to tell for sure what exactly is causing it to freeze. Stupid question I know.
